How I Overcame 5 Limiting Beliefs That Kept Me Poor

Aug 12, 2024

In my journey as a business owner, I've encountered many obstacles, but none were as challenging as my own limiting beliefs. These beliefs kept me stuck in a scarcity mindset, preventing me from achieving the abundance I desired. Here are five limiting beliefs that kept me poor and how shifting to an abundance mindset changed everything for me.

1. There is a Shortage of Money

For most of my life, I believed there was a shortage of money in the world. I thought wealth was limited and that making money was nearly impossible without endless hardship and luck. This belief fed other limiting thoughts, convincing me that becoming rich required extraordinary effort and circumstances.

Example: When starting my business, I often hesitated to invest in marketing or automations because I feared there wouldn’t be enough return on investment. This fear kept my business growth stagnant.

Abundant Belief: Money is abundant and flows to those who provide value. When I began to see money as a renewable resource, I realized that by focusing on creating value and serving others, wealth naturally followed.

Example: I started investing in high-quality marketing and customer service tools. The result was a significant increase in customer satisfaction and sales, proving that value creation leads to financial abundance.

2. Don't Be Greedy

I used to think that taking too much was greedy because of a perceived scarcity of resources. However, believing in a limitless supply makes the notion of greed ridiculous. Thinking small doesn't allow for self-expression or maximizing your impact and service to others.

Example: I under-priced my service because I felt it would be 'too much'. This limited my business’s growth potential and impact.

Abundant Belief: Thinking big can be a selfless act. More people benefit as you grow and serve to achieve ambitious goals, inspiring greatness in others too.

Example: I got real with the results delivered and priced accordingly, and continuously strengthen my belief in this.

3. I Don’t Have Much to Offer

I avoided facing my vulnerabilities and suffered with medium-low self-worth, doubting myself at the slightest contradiction. This lack of self-belief made me feel that I had nothing valuable to offer.

Example: When presenting ideas in meetings, I often downplayed my contributions, assuming others had better insights. This habit hindered my ability to lead and innovate.

Abundant Belief: I am worth millions and have immense value to share. By recognising my worth and committing to sharing as much as possible, I feel like a multi-millionaire.

Example: I showed up better everyday not to just get-by but to grow my community and deepen my mission. This is not only building my reputation but also attracted new clients who valued my expertise.

4. Focused on Getting

I focused on getting rather than giving. Even if two people perform the same actions, the one focused on service will yield better results than the one focused solely on closing sales.

Example: In sales, I was more focused on closing the deal than understanding clients' needs. Once I began to understand my sales process and change my belief, I noticed that this approach was flawed!

Abundant Belief: What can I give and do for others? By focusing on service, I trust that the returns will naturally flow. Putting out good ensures I cannot lose.

Example: I shifted my focus to understanding clients' challenges and offering tailored solutions. This change fostered stronger relationships and more repeat business, proving that a service-oriented mindset drives sustainable success.

5. Belief that Material Riches Are Wealth

I judged my success by external possessions, feeling like a failure without them. This shallow approach made me dependent on external validation, preventing me from developing inner success and value.

Example: I used to measure my success by what I had achieved, which led to stress and dissatisfaction when I 'wasn't achieving'.

Abundant Belief: Material riches are expressions of inner wealth. Recognising and nurturing inner riches allows me to manifest external success. You can't give what you don't believe you have.

Example: I started to align my identity with that of an advancing person, someone who has the power and ability to advance the lives of others. I began to see myself as a valuable and rich person and cultivate the feeling of success from simply being this person, and not relying on any external achievement to validate it.

Call to Action: Embrace Your Value

Now, it’s your turn. Take a moment to write down five ways you provide massive value to your customers, team, community, industry, and family. Reflect on the alternative cost to these groups if you avoided providing this value for the next 12-24 months. What negative impact would it have financially, emotionally, mentally, physically, spiritually?

Recognise the incredible value you deliver through your existence. Focus on these contributions daily to build a never-before experienced sense of power within. Remember, the abundance you seek is already within you. By acknowledging and embracing this, you’ll stop chasing material things and start attracting true wealth and fulfilment.

Consequences of Avoiding Value

Avoiding recognising your value has significant consequences for all areas of your life. If you hold back, your customers might seek alternatives, leading to a loss of business and reputation. Your team might feel unsupported, resulting in decreased morale and productivity. Your community could miss out on your unique contributions, weakening communal bonds and growth. The industry might stagnate without your innovations and insights, and your family could suffer from a lack of financial stability and emotional support.

Recognise and Act

Recognise the impact you have simply by being you. Each day, focus on the value you bring and the positive ripple effects you create, and be grateful for these blessings! By doing so, you'll not only enhance your self-worth but also pave the way for greater abundance and fulfilment in all aspects of your life.

Now, take a deep breath and acknowledge the value you provide. Write down those seven ways you contribute, and let this awareness guide you to live an abundant life. Embrace the mindset of abundance and watch as opportunities and wealth flow naturally towards you.
